National Geographic Magazine - Daily Dozen, Published Oct 28, 2014

It isn't unusual for older men in China to take their precious birds early in the morning on their daily stroll to the park. They hang up their various ornate bamboo birdcages to the lower branches for hours while the men play mahjong, exercise or catch up on daily gossip. The hobby of walking pet birds has been popular in China since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and this old tradition continues until today. Quite often these birds are their only companion and they treat them as part of the family.
